Aoyama Square is a welfare facility located in a quiet residential area of Minami-Aoyama, Minato Ward, comprising a special nursing home and a group home. As a welfare facility situated in the heart of the city, it adopts a compact circulation plan within a limited site to secure spacious living areas.
The second and third floors incorporate borrowed views of the greenery from Aoyama Cemetery, while the fourth floor features an open rooftop garden, creating a comfortable and pleasant living environment for residents.
The exterior of the building is finished with exposed concrete, and the design emphasizes horizontal balcony lines combined with semi-transparent railings to reduce any sense of oppression and harmonize with the surrounding environment. Nearby stands the National Art Center, Tokyo, also designed by our firm, and the fractal curves of the rooftop garden resonate with the Kurokawa design philosophy.
The main entrance, serving as the face of the facility, features walls with cedar board formwork, and a community center is positioned to the right, visible from outside. The community center includes a wooden deck terrace, providing a space where residents can meet their beloved pets. Designed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the consultation room was planned to allow isolation and direct access from outside, enabling family visits even under entry restrictions. The entrance hall is finished with real wood flooring and ceilings, creating an interior that harmonizes wood and concrete.
Maximum attention was given to greening the site, with a vegetable garden placed on the northeast side of the property, allowing residents to enjoy horticultural therapy in the garden and rooftop spaces.
At night, panoramic views of Roppongi and Shibuya unfold, and the rooftop offers a stunning view of Tokyo’s city lights. For those who have lived in Tokyo, this facility provides an ideal location to spend their later years in the city they call home.
